3D World Magazine has posted my tutorial on their site so you can pick up the entire tutorial for free, with videos and all. It should help develop a good modelling workflow and shows the tools and tricks I use the most when modelling, especially when I'm working on intricate models. There is also code for a quad cylinder that means you don't have to use a normal cylinder with the triangles on either end. Here's the link:

xform -scale 0.7 0 0.7;
should actually read;
xform -scale 0.7 1 0.7;
